چکیده

Arsenic (V) removal using cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) micelles and 5 kilo-Dalton (kDa) polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was studied in the presence of multiple co-ions. The concentrations of arsenic ([As]F = 0 105 μg/L) and co-ions ([CO3] = 0 – 4 mg/L, [PO4] = 0 – 0.3 mg/L, [SiO3] = 0 – 71 mg/L, and [SO4] = 0 – 400 mg/L) in simulated feed water were varied. Without the addition of CPC micelles, the PES membrane was found to be ineffective for arsenic removal. In the presence of co-ions, the highest arsenic removal was 25%. However, the addition of CPC micelles significantly increases the arsenic removal efficiency. Regardless of the presence of co-ions, the arsenic concentrations in permeate water were consistently reduced well below the new maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 μg/L. The repeatable results obtained suggest that using ultrafiltration membranes with CPC micelles can be an alternative treatment technology for arsenic removal from contaminated water.

Semiequilibrium Dialysis versus Ultrafiltration for the Separation of Arsenic from Water Using Cationic Amphiphilic Aggregates

A process, which does not require the addition of large amounts of chemicals, for the removal of arsenic (V) utilizing amphiphilic aggregates (i.e. cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) micelles) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes has been studied. The suitability of UF process was evaluated with semi-equilibrium dialysis (SED) cell since the UF process incorporated with amphiphilic aggregates is an e...

Removal of arsenic from groundwater by electro-ultrafiltration

The objective of this study was to examine the removal of arsenic from groundwater by a laboratory scale electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) system. Two groundwater samples taken from I-Ian County located in the northeastern part of Taiwan were studied. These well waters were selected based on their As(III) and As(V) contents; the As(III) to As(V) ratios of the well water were 1.8 and 0.4 for Well-#1...

The Ultrafiltration Performance of Cellulose Acetate Asymmetric Membranes: A New Perspective on the Correlation with the Infrared Spectra

Integral asymmetric cellulose acetate (CA) membranes were casted by phase-inversion with formamide varying content - 22, 30 and 34% - as pore promoter. These membranes, CA-22, CA-30 and CA-34, were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection mode (ATR-FTIR) to investigate the porous membrane matrix influence on the polymer/water/solute interactions and the selective ultrafi...

Fabrication and characterization of polycarbonate/titanium oxide nanotubes mixed matrix membranes for efficient removal of cadmium and copper from aqueous solution

In this study, novel polycarbonate-titanium oxide nanotubes (PC-TNT) ultrafiltration mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were fabricated for decontamination of Cd2+ and Cu2+ metal ions from aqueous solution. The weight percent of TNTs in the polycarbonate membrane matrix was changed from 0 to 15. The synthesized neat PC membrane and PC-TNTs MMMs were characterized with respect to structural morpholog...
